Working visit at the Naval Academy “Nikola Vaptsarov” supported by the NATO DEEP

In the period 13.12 – 16.12.2017, COL Prof. Dr. Orce Popovski and LTC Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mitko Bogdanoski had a working visit to the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna, Bulgaria.

The visit was organized within the framework of the NATO Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP), and the host of the activity was the vice-rector Prof.  Dr. Kalin Kalinov, who is also the leader of the team of experts who are engaged by NATO DEEP in the activities related to our Military Academy.

The focus of the visit was given to the quality management system in the educational process, which has already been established at the Naval Academy and is in accordance with the ISO 9001: 2008 standard. Currently, they are working on the implementation of ISO 9001: 2015 standard.

The host granted their full support and guidance for the implementation of the mentioned certification in the Military Academy, and additionally, they promise to check the possibility of covering the costs related to certification through NATO DEEP program.

In addition, there was a discussion of further activities related to NATO DEEP, which are planned in the period January-June 2018, i.e. until the new Strategic Defense Review (SDR) of the Republic of Macedonia is adopted. The reason for these is that most of the activities that will be conducted with the Military Academy, through DEEP, will need to be in accordance with the new SDR.

During the visit, there were a lot of discussions for possible cooperation between the Military Academy and the Naval Academy. One of the topics of discussion was signing of a Memorandum of Understanding which would include more opportunities for cooperation, including:

  • Participation of the Naval Academy cadets in the Summer Campus, organized by the Military Academy and sending of cadets from the Military Academy to a week-long visit to the Naval Academy during the Cadet Week program organized within their institution.
  • Exchange of experiences between the teaching staff through the organization of invited lectures.
  • Joint participation in international projects.
  •  Cooperation in the field of cyber defence, primarily because of the establishment of a new cyber defence center within the Naval Academy and demonstrated interest to exchange experiences in this field. Within this segment, the possibility of participating in joint projects and activities together with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was considered, with which the Military Academy already has active cooperation in this field.
